Sea World Baby Shamu Announcement 1985

This is a birth announcement card for the arrival of “Baby Shamu”, the first successful birth of a killer whale in captivity.

The name Shamu is essentially SeaWorld’s stage name for any of its killer whales and SeaWorld has personal names for each individual for use outside of performances. Baby Shamu’s name was Kalina and she was the daughter of Katina (mom) and Winston (dad). She was born on September 26, 1985 at SeaWorld Orlando.

Not long after the birth, Kalina would be brought out with her mother into the main pool for guests to see her. She learned to perform behaviors along with the other whales and eventually became an important part of Shamu shows.

Kalina died on October 4, 2010 due to bacteremia septicemia (sepsis). She had four children, five grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
